Get the graceful, steady movements created by dolly shots or a Steadicam operator right on your phone. That’s the promise of the just-released Steady iPhone app, created by the engineers at Stupeflix. It uses the iPhone’s gyroscope sensors to know where the camera is pointing, then it compensates for the camera operator’s steps, as well as any bobbing or shaking.
For small companies and brands that prefer to do-it-themselves, iPhone apps prove a decent substitute to more expensive cameras. Steady is the latest example. Shoot a few minutes of video with this $1.99 app to see just how impressive the results are. The app offers an instant preview, so you can see how it removes distracting movements.
Steady offers a slow motion effect. Turn it on before you shoot, then you can adjust the start and end points for the effect in the video preview. The app also lets you shoot in both 16:9 and 1:1 ratios (simply turn the phone sideways for landscape orientation). The square shape is perfect for Vine and Instagram campaigns.
Anyone with an iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, or 5S can give is a try, but note that slo-mo doesn’t work on the 4S. The 5S can capture 120fps slo-mo, while the 5 and 5C capture 60fps slo-mo. So far there’s no iPad version.
For the best results, the makers recommend you shoot outside or in a well-lit environment. Also, focus on one subject while moving the camera. Once you’ve shot a video, hold two fingers on the video preview to see the difference before and after stabilization.
