It’s been a long two year wait, but the second Vimeo Festival and Awards is almost here. This morning, Vimeo opened submissions for the awards portion, which celebrates creative original videos. Vimeo has created 13 categories and will award $5,000 grants to category winners. The grand prize winner will take home a $25,000 grant.
The 2012 award show will include four new categories:
- Action Sports
The other nine categories are:
- Motion Graphics
- Music Video
The submission period runs from December 13, 2011, to February 20, 2012. There’s a $20 entry fee per video, reduced to $5 for Vimeo Pro and Vimeo Plus members. Entries must be original works that premiered online between July 31, 2010, and February, 20, 2012 (or have never appeared online).
Judges will include two industry experts per category, plus an independent jury that will include 2010 Vimeo winners.
Vimeo will announce the shortlist of top videos in April, then the finalists in May. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in June tied to the two-day Vimeo Festival. The dates for the festival and awards haven’t yet been given.
“Since our inaugural event, we have watched online video explode into a primary medium for new talent discovery,” says Jeremy Boxer, director of the Vimeo Festival + Awards. “More and more creators earn visibility, credibility, and, ultimately, work by showcasing their videos online. We created the Vimeo Festival + Awards to celebrate the best of the best of these videos.”
Vimeo is known as the creative professional’s alternative to YouTube. This year, the site became more business-friendly by opening Vimeo Pro in August (offering $199 per year video hosting) and the Vimeo Music Store in September (selling inexpensive licensed music for commercial and non-commercial videos).
