Every Online Video Platform (OVP) on the Market: A Reference List

If you’re shopping for an online video platform (OVP), you might feel overwhelmed right from the start. How many are there? How do you figure out which one is best for you?

To help you, we present this complete list of every OVP currently on the market. It’s a fast-changing area, so we’ll update it a few times a year.

The list is courtesy of VidCompare, a site that helps buyers learn about and filter OVPs. Visiting it is an essential part of your OVP research.

An OVP, to crib VidCompare’s definition, is software-as-a-service that provides end-to-end tools for managing, publishing, and measuring live and on-demand video. Typical components include video hosting, encoding, custom players, syndication, analytics, interactivity, and monetization. Because many fine business video offerings aren’t quite OVPs, we’re presenting a smaller list of additional video services at the end.

For an in-depth look at ten top OVPs, including Brightcove, Kaltura, and Sorenson 360, read A Buyers’ Guide to Online Video Platforms from StreamingMedia.com.

  1. Very short list – just checking who was nominated in this years streaming media awards would give a much better overview. Looks like the referenced website making the list is funded and maintained by brightcove – would be nice with a vendor independent source for these things ;)
Anyway, short post turned long – have a look at http://www.qbrick.com – you won’t be disappointed

    • Hi Lars,

Sorry you are not happy with the massive amount of work I’ve put into VidCompare. No, the site is not funded by Brightcove and yes, it is 100% unbiased. Mette on your team submitted for Qbrick to be listed in our directory after reading this post. Perhaps you two should talk. Thanks for the feedback.

    • [ IMHO ]

Kris’s work on Vidcompare is as impressive as it is unbiased and to comment otherwise is both unfortunate and unfair.

If it weren’t for his exhaustive efforts, easily finding this many reputable & relevant OVPs on a single site wouldn’t even be possible (outside of Vidcompare). If I’m wrong, my apologies and please do share, ’cause many people would greatly benefit from the additional information.

So I applaud Kris for sharing this so openly, especially since such valuable information could easily be considered a vital component to the success of his own site.

With so many platforms newly launching, disappearing or being acquired, navigating the online video landscape can prove challenging for novices, as well as, those well versed in the space. So having a list of this calibre from someone who for years has had the most extensive and thorough knowledge of available online video platforms, is really a great thing for everybody.

So kudos to both Kris and onlivideo.net for providing such a rich resource for those searching for online video solutions.

I’m sure they will find it to be extremely helpful.

  2. Great list, I was only aware of a handful these video platforms.

I’ve been using Brightcove for years but now mostly Bits On The Run because it is more flexible for player development and substantially cheaper.

  3. Would be interested in clarifying the definitional distinction between: 1) On-line Video Platform, 2) Over the Top (OTT) Platform, and 3) IPTV Platform. It seems they all share core technology and that the additional feature set that is valuable is more a function of the nature of the customer than anything else.

  7. SDL Media Manager is missing on the list. SDL Media Manager helps global organizations to manage, localize and distribute their video across their various web, mobile and DOOH channels.

  8. Another online video platform provider not included in this list is Mirror Image, http://www.mirror-image.com

Mirror Image Publisher is an OVP.
