Sony Offers Special Effects Suite for Aspiring Filmmakers

Sony has added a new version to its Vegas Movie Studio line of home editing programs, and this one is ideal for the wannabe special effects wizards on a budget. Called Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 Visual Effects Suite, the program combines Vegas Movie Studio’s simple timeline-based editing controls with special effects created by U.K. company HitFilm Standard.

The program offers 2D layer compositing (letting editors blend layers together to create impressive effects) and genuine 3D compositing (which uses predesigned 3D particle effects, such as smoke, fire, and explosions).

Editors also get a collection of 40 filters to stylize the look of their videos, green screen removal, and a 3D tool just for creating muzzle flashes to give action sequences more realism.

“To differentiate productions found on the big or small screen, users require impressive visual effects that go beyond what’s included in typical stand-alone software applications,” says Dave Chaimson, vice president of global marketing for Sony Creative Software. “Vegas Movie Studio Visual Effects Suite meets the needs of budget-minded filmmakers and hobbyists who desire the capability to create movies with stunning visual effects.”

The software sells for $199.95 boxed or $194.95 when downloaded. Sony also offers a free trial for download.
